A postdoctoral position in physical oceanography is available at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) of the University of California San Diego. The postdoctoral researcher will investigate (sub)mesoscale dynamics worldwide using the soon-to-be available SWOT observations of sea surface height . In addition to the SWOT observations, the postdoc is expected to work with a variety of data (e.g. conventional altimetry observations and large numerical simulations ran at NASA/JPL) and to work closely with Asst. Prof. L. Siegelman and her team.  Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students is also expected.

The initial term of the appointment will be 24 months, with the possibility of extension. Preferred start date Jan-Feb 2024, but this is negotiable.

Job Responsibility:  The individual will be expected to conduct independent, high-quality research in physical oceanography; publish papers; and present work at national and international conferences. The postdoctoral researcher will also work collaboratively with oceanographers at partner institutions both within and outside of the US.

Qualifications: A PhD in physical oceanography or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Experience in analyzing physical oceanographic data (including programming in Python or Julia) is highly desirable but not indispensable. Strong oral and written communication skills are expected.

Salary: Commensurate with the individual’s experience and education.

Employment: The University of California, San Diego is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence and diversity (

Application Procedure/To apply: Interested individuals should send a CV, a two page statement of research interest that also summarizes past research, and the names and contact information of 3 references to

Position will remain open until filled but applications received by November 31, 2023 will receive precedence.
